Book Review:
Preetha Rajah Kannan's ''Son of Shiva'' is a captivating and vividly told retelling of the legend of Kartikeya, the warrior-god and commander-in-chief of the celestial armies. This book brings to life the epic battle between the forces of good and evil, embodied by the devas and the asuras, in a way that is both exciting and spiritually resonant.
The story centers on the asura king Surapadma, who has become so powerful that he threatens the very existence of the gods. In their desperation, the gods turn to Shiva, and the divine spark that leads to the birth of Kartikeya is kindled. The narrative follows Kartikeya's rapid growth into a powerful and wise warrior, his assumption of the role of general of the divine army, and his final, monumental confrontation with Surapadma.
Kannan's prose is descriptive and engaging, painting a vivid picture of the celestial realms, the fearsome asura armies, and the dazzling weapons of the gods. The battle scenes are particularly well-rendered, full of action and drama. We see Kartikeya wield his divine spear, his discus, and other weapons with devastating effect against the seemingly invincible Surapadma. The book also touches upon the deeper symbolism of the story, the eternal struggle between dharma and adharma, light and darkness.
''Son of Shiva'' is a wonderful introduction to the mythology of Kartikeya for readers unfamiliar with his story, and a satisfying retelling for those who already know and love it. It is a fast-paced, engaging, and ultimately inspiring tale of courage, wisdom, and the triumph of good over evil. A worthy addition to the genre of mythological fiction.
